Individuals Special Modes of Taxation

Pension Income from Services Rendered Abroad

For individuals residing in Cyprus, pension income derived from services rendered outside the country is taxed at a special flat rate of 5% on amounts exceeding €3,420 annually. Residents have the option to either apply this special tax rate or include the pension income under their regular personal income tax rates. This choice allows for flexibility in tax planning according to individual financial circumstances.

Widow’s Pension

The widow’s pension, sourced from the Social Insurance Fund or other approved pension funds, is subjected to a flat tax rate of 20% on amounts exceeding €19,500. Alternatively, taxpayers may opt to be taxed based on personal income tax rates, incorporating the pension into their overall taxable income. This provides an opportunity for pension recipients to choose the most beneficial tax treatment.

Variable Remuneration in the Funds Industry

Employees in the funds industry, specifically those working for Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) Managers, self-managed AIFs, or Management Companies for Collective Investments in Transferable Securities (UCITS), who earn variable remuneration linked to carried interest, benefit from a specialized flat tax rate of 8%. This is with a minimum tax liability set at €10,000 annually. Eligible employees may choose this favorable tax rate annually for up to ten years, or alternatively, they can be taxed under the standard personal income tax rates.

Professional Fees and Public Entertainer Income

Non-residents performing professional services, or functioning as entertainers in Cyprus, are subject to a 10% withholding tax on their income. This includes professionals, entertainers, athletic teams, and other performance groups, with potential rate reductions under tax treaties.

Payment and Penalties for Withholding Tax

Withheld taxes on payments to non-residents must be remitted to the Tax Department by the end of the month following the payment. Delays in payment may attract interest and penalties, emphasizing the importance of timely tax compliance.
